Lunch & Learn: Asset-Based Approaches to Understanding Students’ Social Networks

WCDA aims to provide at least one (1) professional development opportunity per month for its members. Please join WCDA for our September Lunch & Learn professional development opportunity.

This workshop will present key findings from The Networks and Cultural Assets Project (NCA) at the University of Wisconsin-Madison’s Center for College-Workforce Transitions. NCA is a longitudinal research initiative exploring the relationship between students’ social networks and their Community Cultural Wealth (CCW). We will introduce the CCW framework as a lens for understanding the assets students bring to college from their families, communities, cultures, and experiences. We will then review our methods for measuring students’ social networks and cultural assets, and present preliminary findings from three years of data collection. For example, we will consider how students’ CCW relates to the structure of their social networks, with a special focus on the concepts of “multiplexity” and “closure”. Participants will learn how to apply these concepts in their work with students, including using Network Canvas as a tool to guide conversations with students about the intentional development of a professional network. The goal of this workshop is to provide career services professionals with another tool for supporting students’ existing strengths, and offer evidence-based insights on how students develop personal and professional networks in college.
